About Disability Help

What Is Disability Help?

An independent, plain-language resource for disability help in the United States. It explains SSDI and SSI, VA disability compensation, health coverage, state disability insurance, your rights and help for caregivers, using official sources such as ssa.gov, va.gov, the eCFR and state agency sites. It is not a government agency and not a law firm, and it doesn't give legal advice.

Who This Site Is for

People with disabilities, family caregivers, parents of disabled children and veterans who want a straight answer about a benefit or a right, and the official place to act on it. Pages are written in plain words, with the year on every dollar figure and a link to the rule it comes from.

What You'll Find Here

  • 32 guides across 6 topics: Social Security Disability Benefits, VA Disability Compensation, Health Care and Services, State Disability Insurance, Rights and Daily Life, Caregivers.
  • 15 condition pages, one for each adult body system in SSA's Listing of Impairments (the "Blue Book") plus one for childhood listings, explaining what each listing asks for in plain words.
  • 52 state pages, covering each state's SSI supplement, disability insurance, Medicaid paths, vocational rehabilitation, protection and advocacy agency, ABLE program and parking placard rules.
  • 4 free tools: VA Combined Rating Calculator, SSI Payment Estimator, Disability Eligibility Screener, Disability Back Pay Estimator. They follow the official tables and run in your browser.

What This Site Is Not

Disability Help is a private website. It is not run by, connected to or endorsed by the Social Security Administration (SSA), the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), any state agency or any other part of government. It can't see your records, take an application, check the status of a claim or decide anything about your benefits.

It is also not a law firm and doesn't give legal, financial or benefits advice about your situation. No one at Disability Help represents people before SSA or VA. The guides explain the published rules so you can take the next step with the right agency or a qualified representative.

Where to Get Official Help With Your Case

  • Social Security. Apply, appeal or ask about your SSDI or SSI claim at ssa.gov/disability, or call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). Applying and appealing are free.
  • VA-accredited representatives and veterans service organizations. VA lets accredited attorneys, claims agents and veterans service organization (VSO) representatives help with a claim. VSO representatives help for free. Search for one with VA's accredited representative tool, and see the guide to filing a VA disability claim.
  • Protection and Advocacy agencies. Every state has a federally mandated protection and advocacy agency that helps people with disabilities with rights issues. Each state page names the agency for that state and links to it.
  • State vocational rehabilitation. Each state's VR agency helps people with disabilities prepare for, find and keep work. The vocational rehabilitation guide explains who qualifies, and the U.S. Department of Education lists every agency on its state VR agency directory.

Who Reviews This Site

Michael Rupe, U.S. Air Force veteran, reviews pages for accuracy and clarity, with particular attention to the VA disability content. He checks that each page says what the official source says, that figures carry the right year, and that the wording is plain enough to act on.

He is not an attorney, not an SSA or VA employee and not a VA-accredited representative. He doesn't take on cases or give advice about individual claims. For help with your own claim, use the free official help listed above.

Who Publishes the Site

Disability Help is published by Rupe Enterprises LLC, a Washington company. The same publisher runs the sister site socialsecurityofficesnearme.com, an independent finder for Social Security office addresses, phone numbers and hours. Pages here link to it wherever you need an office.

How the Site Is Paid for

The site is free to use. It is paid for by display ads from Google AdSense, each labelled "Advertisement." Ads never appear above a page's answer or inside a tool, and advertisers have no say in what a page says. A clearly labelled sponsored offer may appear later on some Social Security benefit pages, never inside a tool or an answer. The advertising disclosure has the details.

How Pages Are Checked and Corrected

The methodology lists the sources behind each kind of page and how yearly figures are refreshed, and the editorial policy sets out the standards every page meets. If you spot an error, send a correction through the contact form with the page and the official source that shows the right detail.

disability.help is an independent publisher, not a government agency. To apply for Social Security disability benefits, go to ssa.gov. For VA disability compensation, go to va.gov.
