How to Check Your VA Claim Status
How Do You Check Your VA Claim Status?
Check your VA claim status online with VA.gov's claim status tool after you sign in with Login.gov or ID.me, or call VA's benefits hotline at 800-827-1000, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. ET. The tool shows which of the 8 steps your disability claim has reached, any evidence VA has asked for, and your decision letter once it's ready. See how a VA disability claim works from filing to decision.

Your VA claim status tells you where a disability claim is in VA’s review and what, if anything, VA needs from you. You can check it online at any hour or by phone on weekdays. The status alone doesn’t give a decision date, but knowing the step your claim is on tells you roughly how much is left.
How to Check Your VA Claim Status Online
The fastest way is VA.gov’s claim status tool. It works at any time and shows more than a phone call will.
- Go to VA.gov’s claim status page and choose to check your status.
- Sign in with a Login.gov or ID.me account. Both are free, and you can create one on the spot if you don’t have one.
- Find your claim, decision review or appeal in the list. The list shows each one’s current status.
- Select a claim to see its full details: the step it’s on, what you claimed, the evidence you filed online, and any evidence VA has asked you for.
The tool covers disability compensation, including automobile and clothing allowance claims. It also covers Veterans and Survivors Pension, special monthly compensation such as Aid and Attendance, Dependency and Indemnity Compensation, burial allowances, housing adaptation grants, and requests to add or remove dependents. For a health care claim, your decision letter tells you how to check its status instead.
If you haven’t filed yet, start with how to file a VA disability claim, including the intent to file that can protect your start date.
Checking Your Claim Status by Phone
Call the VA benefits hotline at 800-827-1000 (TTY: 711), Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. ET. A representative can tell you your claim’s status and whether VA is waiting on anything from you. For health care benefits, VA’s health benefits hotline is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET.
Online is usually better for detail: the tool lists requested evidence item by item and lets you upload it the same day.
What Each VA Claim Status Step Means
A disability compensation claim moves through 8 steps. Most of the waiting happens at Step 3.
| Step | Status | What’s happening |
|---|---|---|
| Step 1 | Claim received | VA has your claim in its system. |
| Step 2 | Initial review | VA checks for basic information, like your name and Social Security number, and contacts you if anything is missing. |
| Step 3 | Evidence gathering | VA makes sure it has every record it needs. It may ask you for evidence, schedule a claim exam, request private medical records or pull VA records. This is usually the longest step. |
| Step 4 | Evidence review | VA reviews all the evidence for your claim. |
| Step 5 | Rating | VA decides your claim and sets your disability rating. |
| Step 6 | Preparing decision letter | VA writes your decision letter. If you’re eligible, it states your rating, your monthly payment and when payments start. |
| Step 7 | Final review | A senior reviewer checks the decision and the letter. |
| Step 8 | Claim decided | Your decision letter is ready in the claim status tool, and a copy is in the mail. |
Other claim types, such as pension or burial claims, show 5 shorter statuses: claim received; initial review; evidence gathering, review and decision; preparation for notification; and complete. “Complete” means VA has mailed your decision letter.
Once your rating arrives, see how VA disability ratings work and how VA combines several ratings, or run your numbers through the VA combined rating calculator.
How Long a VA Claim Takes in 2026
VA reported an average of 68.2 days to complete disability-related claims in September 2026. That’s an average across every claim, so yours may be faster or slower. Three things decide the pace:
- The type of claim you filed.
- How many conditions you claimed and how complex they are.
- How long evidence takes to collect, including records from private doctors and the timing of your claim exam.
If you mailed your claim, expect VA’s letter confirming it about 1 week after VA receives it, plus mailing time. Online filers see a confirmation on screen right away.
While you wait, you don’t need to do anything unless VA sends a letter asking for more information. Never miss a scheduled claim exam: it’s often the evidence VA is waiting for.
Why Your Claim Went Back to Evidence Gathering
Seeing your claim drop from Step 4, 5 or 6 back to Step 3 is common and isn’t a denial. It happens for two reasons:
- VA needs more evidence to decide, such as another record or an exam.
- You sent more evidence after Step 3. VA accepts evidence at any time, but anything new sends the claim back to Step 3 so it can be reviewed with the rest.
If you’re holding a document that matters, send it as early as you can. Late evidence still counts, but it restarts the review loop.
Uploading Evidence Through the Claim Status Tool
You can add evidence to an initial claim right in the tool. Open the claim, go to the Files tab, and under Additional evidence select Add Files.
- Accepted file types are PDF, GIF, JPEG, BMP and TXT.
- Each file can be up to 25 MB. Mail anything larger to the address where you mailed your claim, or take it to a VA regional office.
- Don’t upload claim forms here. The tool can’t be used to file a new claim.
- You can’t upload evidence for a decision review or an appeal through the tool.
Documents you mail, fax or bring in person won’t appear in the tool, even though VA has them. Neither will records VA restricts for privacy. Keep your own copies and note the date you sent each one.
When Your Decision Letter Arrives
When a disability claim reaches Step 8, you can review and download the decision letter in the claim status tool, often before the paper copy arrives. The mailed copy should arrive within 10 business days, but it may take longer. For other claim types, a “complete” status means the letter was mailed and should take 7 to 10 business days to arrive. If it hasn’t come within 10 days, call 800-827-1000.
The letter states your rating, your monthly payment and the date payments start. Check the amount against the 2026 VA disability pay rates for your rating and dependents.
What to Do After Your Claim Is Decided
If you agree with the decision, payments begin from the date in your letter. If you disagree with a decision you received on or after February 19, 2019, you can ask VA to review it through one of 3 decision review options. Each has its own deadline and evidence rules, explained in your options after a VA decision. You can track a decision review or appeal in the same claim status tool.
If your conditions keep you from working, read about total disability based on individual unemployability (TDIU), which can pay at the same level as a 100% rating. If you’re already at 100%, see the benefits that come with a 100% VA rating.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Long Does a VA Disability Claim Take in 2026?
VA reported an average of 68.2 days to complete disability-related claims in September 2026. Your claim can take longer if you claimed several conditions, if they're complex, or if VA has to wait for records or an exam.
Why Did My VA Claim Go Back to Evidence Gathering?
A claim moves back to Step 3 whenever VA needs more evidence or you send more evidence after that step. It's a normal part of the process, not a denial, and the claim moves forward again once the new evidence is reviewed.
Can I Check My VA Claim Status by Phone?
Yes. Call the VA benefits hotline at 800-827-1000 (TTY: 711), Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. ET.
Why Doesn't My Evidence Show Up in the Claim Status Tool?
The tool doesn't list documents you mailed, faxed or brought to VA in person, or documents VA restricted to protect someone's privacy. VA still has them; they just don't appear online.
How Long After the Claim Is Decided Does the Letter Come?
VA mails a copy of your decision letter, which should arrive within 10 business days. For many claims you can download the letter in the claim status tool as soon as it's ready, so check there first.
Can I Track a Decision Review or Appeal the Same Way?
Yes. The same tool shows the status of decision reviews and appeals, but you can't upload evidence for a review or an appeal there. See your options after a VA decision.
