SSDI Calculator for 2026

How Much SSDI Would You Get?

SSDI pays a monthly amount based on your lifetime earnings, not on financial need. SSA applies a formula to your average indexed monthly earnings: in 2026, 90% of the first $1,286, 32% up to $7,749 and 15% above that. Enter your average yearly earnings to estimate your benefit; the average disabled worker gets $1,630 a month in 2026.

Your Earnings

Earnings above the $184,500 taxable maximum for 2026 don't count, so the estimate caps them there.

How SSA Works Out Your SSDI

  1. SSA adjusts each year of your past earnings for wage growth and averages them into your average indexed monthly earnings (AIME). This tool divides the yearly average you enter by 12.
  2. It applies the 2026 formula: 90% of the first $1,286, plus 32% of the part between $1,286 and $7,749, plus 15% of anything above $7,749.
  3. The result is rounded down to the next lower 10 cents. That's your primary insurance amount, the monthly SSDI benefit before any deductions such as Medicare premiums.

The formula and bend points are from SSA's primary insurance amount page and bend point table. To qualify at all you need enough work credits and a disability that meets SSA's definition; see disability requirements and how SSDI works. If your income and resources are low, compare SSDI and SSI or try the SSI calculator.

Get Your Real Numbers

SSA's online my Social Security account shows your Social Security Statement, including your earnings history, and lets you check your reported earnings. If a year is missing or wrong, it lowers your benefit, so it's worth checking before you apply. To estimate what you're owed for past months, use the back pay calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Is SSDI Calculated?

SSDI pays your primary insurance amount (PIA). For people who first become eligible in 2026, SSA adds 90% of the first $1,286 of your average indexed monthly earnings, 32% of the amount from $1,286 through $7,749, and 15% of anything above, then rounds down to the next lower 10 cents.

What Is the Average SSDI Payment in 2026?

SSA estimates the average monthly benefit for disabled workers at $1,630 after the 2026 cost-of-living adjustment.

Why Might My Real SSDI Amount Differ From This Estimate?

SSA adjusts each past year's earnings for wage growth, uses the years on your own record, and applies the formula for the year you became eligible. This estimate applies the 2026 formula to an average you enter, so it's a rough guide. Your Social Security Statement shows your actual earnings history.

Does SSDI Pay More for Family Members?

Some family members, such as a spouse or children, may also get benefits on your record, up to a family maximum. This estimate covers your own benefit only; see how SSDI works for the rules.
